A Historic Milestone: The UN Human Rights Council Moves Towards a Legally Binding Instrument for the Rights of Older Persons
On April 3, the United Nations Human Rights Council achieved a historic breakthrough in the protection of the rights of older persons by adopting Resolution A/HRC/58/L.24/Rev.1. This resolution establishes an Open-ended Intergovernmental Working Group, tasked with drafting a legally binding instrument on the human rights of older persons.
For over two decades, discussions at the United Nations have highlighted critical gaps in the international human rights framework regarding the protection of older persons. This new resolution is the result of relentless advocacy from civil society, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), and regional human rights systems, all supported by the UN family.
As global populations continue to age, this step is more urgent than ever. Legal safeguards are needed to combat ageism, promote social inclusion, and ensure the dignity and rights of older persons worldwide.
At GIA Longevity, we celebrate this milestone and reaffirm our commitment to advancing the global agenda on ageing and human rights. Now, the real work beginsโbuilding a framework that truly protects and promotes human dignity for all generations.
