A Landmark Step: The Inter-American Court Recognizes the Right to Care

GIA Longevity welcomes the historic adoption of Advisory Opinion No. 31/2025 by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, in response to a request from the Republic of Argentina.

For the first time, an international tribunal has been consulted on the content and scope of the right to care, addressing the right to care, to be cared for, and to self-care, and its interconnection with the rights to life, family, and economic, social, cultural, and environmental rights.

This groundbreaking process saw participation from more than 265 stakeholders across regions—making it the Court’s second most participatory consultative process—and has set a precedent in placing the right to care firmly within the international human rights framework.

Why it matters for longevity:
The recognition of the right to care is inseparable from healthy ageing, dignity, and equity. Care systems are essential to supporting older persons, enabling interdependence, and ensuring that longevity is lived with quality and inclusion.
