On May 22, 2024, the President of the Global Initiative on Ageing and Longevity (GIA Longevity), Luis Gallegos Chiriboga, met in New York with the highest authorities of the United Nations to discuss the growing importance of global ageing and its inclusion in international agendas. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Chief of Staff Courtney Rattery, and the head of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Liu Zhenmin, participated in the meeting.


Luis Gallegos was accompanied by Silvia Neira, Vice President of GIA Longevity, Frances West, Founder FrancesWest&Co, and David Evangelista, representative of Special Olympics International (SOI). During the meeting, topics such as the implications of ageing on global development, its relationship with the Social Summit, the Digital Pact and the Agenda for the Future were discussed. The projection that the population of older adults will reach 2 billion by 2050 was highlighted, underscoring the urgency of designing inclusive policies for this growing population.
The meeting underscored the need to integrate ageing into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration to address the challenges and seize the opportunities of this demographic transition.
This event reaffirms GIA Longevity’s commitment to promoting inclusive and sustainable policies, collaborating with international organizations to design innovative solutions to improve the quality of life of older adults and encourage their active participation in society.
